New Brackenwood stuff

As my latest contract on Dragon Age Legends winds down and before a new one starts, I want to go crazy on Brackenwood to make some ground on a few things:

New Brackenwood Game

Over the coming weeks you’ll see screenshots and updates on a full featured, brand new Bitey game which I’m making with the help of Flash games creator Sean McGee. The player will guide Bitey through various Brackenwood environments at suitably high speeds encountering challenges and obstacles along the way, whilst unravelling a certain mystery. More info to come soon, but for now, here’s the first image.

Working on a bare bones gameplay prototype with placeholder graphics

New Brackenwood movie

I swore it wouldn’t happen but yep, it’s been 12 months since I released LotD and you’ve grown tired of asking me when the sequel will be done. Due to this year being packed with Wizards of the Coast work (illustration and animation) and EA2D (Legends, of course), I’ve had very little time to work on Brackenwood. I got some writing, storyboarding and one or two scenes done in the beginning of the year, so things are waiting for me to get started again. Once again I can’t give a release date, but here’s an image to whet your appetite (and to prove I’ve done something).

Someone planting trees by moonlight.

You can follow Lemonee Wee and Bitey on Facebook. Bitey doesn’t talk much, apart from mashing the keyboard whenever I remind him to update. Lemonee Wee is a bit more interesting and occasionally posts updates and photos of movie progress.

  1. I gotta be the first to comment…am I? Looks like it to me!! Awesome stuff Adam! (I wonder if I will ever stop being amazed by how good your artwork is…hm..)

  2. You should do the new one in 16:9 😀

    • I’m not going to lie… wordpress said it couldn’t post this comment because I didn’t put in an email… but here it is anyway…

  3. Is the new one going to be in 16:9? I can’t remember what the others were in, should watch them again soon.

  4. Iet LW and Bitey on twitter post haste! 😀

    • Lemonee Wee has been there for a while now, but somehow I don’t think Bitey would tweet regularly –

  5. I’m very excited for all of this!

  6. Looks good, surprised you actually draw stuff for placeholder graphics.
    I always use awesome face.

  7. Thumbs Up.
Very glad for you, Lemonee Wee and Bitey 🙂

  8. Epic. Can’t wait. Do you realize the sheer awesome that beholds you?

  9. Loving the good news man!

Nice to see you’re working again on Brackenwood! And don’t worry, no one will ever judge you or anything for doing freelance work to pay the bills haha! I think the game idea is BRILLIANT, the concept is nice, reminds of the best old-school arcade games, and the screenshot looks very promising. Now that you have more free time, I definitely reccomend that you optimize your YouTube channel and videos! Like I told you in my old messages, there’s still much to develop and generate more activity and revenue for you! Trust me hehe. I mean… You have +17000 followers and only 94 videos lol…. hit me up on YT if you want more optimizing tips and stuff on YT! 😀

All the best and keep up the magic!! 🙂

    • thanks Alex! I’ll drop you a line soon. I’m considering attending the YouTube partner seminar in a couple of days too. Not sure if/how that’ll help 😛

  10. I’m looking forward to your next film. I’ve enjoyed the series of bitey you’ve made for the last 4 or 5 years ago. Here I am, I’m back to check out your next shows. 🙂

  11. Life is too short, Adam. I wish you would just take the plunge.

    • What plunge would that be? I’m in a perpetual plunge since leaving Disney X)

      • plunge?

      • Metaphors are perhaps too vague. Let’s get literal, then: I would like to see Brackenwood become something real, not just a collection of shorts on the internet. The “artist’s” preclusion for poverty aside, I think that you would too. This is going to require two major changes at Bitey central; specifically, employing:
        1) Money which is not your own, and…
        2) People who are not you
History is filled with artists consigned to oblivion because they refused to “compromise their vision”. But that’s a false dilemma-because it’s no longer just your dream, and the more people you share it with, the more people necessarily involved in its creation. Life is too short, Adam. I wish you would just take the plunge.

        • I’ve been a fan of yours – and specifically the Brackenwood Series – for quite some time now. For the past 5 years I’ve been writing/drawing/developing my own fantasy series, and you are one of the people I I look to for inspiration to keep working on it. I understand Seraph’s point, because not a day goes by without me banging my head against a wall wondering how I’m going to get everything done before it’s too late (I just turned 41 Friday before last). I’m nowhere near as skilled as you, but I’ve been learning Flash and now I’m teaching an “apprentice” in exchange for his help with my first animated short film, to be finished next year. What you do with Brackenwood is up to you, and I’m grateful, as many people are, for what you’ve accomplished so far and what you’re currently doing with it. I want to see more, just like everybody else. Wayne Barlowe has Thype. Rob Schrab has Scud. You have Bitey. You’ve all come so far with your personal projects, and you want to do more. Your fans want that for you. I’m sure that there are very talented people following you. I’m sure you know some of them. How you create Brackenwood and share it with the world is up to you, but I know you will do it. I want you to, because if you can do it, maybe I can do the same. Maybe lots of us can – largely because of what we saw you do. Please keep up the good work, and best of luck in all you do!

  12. Ouuu it does look pretty. I’ve been a long time fan of your work and I can’t wait to see the finished product. Good luck with it Adam your one of the best. 🙂

  13. WOW deve estar ficando muito bom!
Estou curioso pra ver, continue fazendo, sou do brasil e um grande fã do das suas animações!

  14. awesome, can’t wait. Oh, here’s a nice story:

Sometime this past week I was wearing my black Bitey t-shirt in physics lab, and one of the other students from a different lab group came up to me (with a grin) and said “yo! that’s that internet flash guy!”. I just started cracking up, and responded “yeah, it’s Bitey!”. He laughed too and said “oh yeah….yeah!!”. There was a little silence, and he followed up with “He’s really great, that guy who makes them.” Of course I told him he was referring to Adam Phillips. That was about it–there were experiments to be run! Anyways, I’m 100% sure he went back to his dorm after class and watched the entire series again.

Again, keep up the good work Mr. Phillips.

  15. Shame on me! How could I miss these fantastic news? New movie, new game…. there are some awards with your name on them waiting on NG, ya know?

  16. Oh my goodness I’ve found you again! I feel ashamed of myself for loosing track of Bitey and the world of Brackenwood, but that’s what happens with college… I’m so glad you’re still animating! I’m excited to see the new Bitey stuff, and I hope we get a chance to see the new movie soon! Much love to you and Bitey!

  17. I’m so pleased your continuing with this AMAZING story!

Thanks so much for your help with my GCSE back in 2008 – Yeah, long time ago! I got an A!

I love your work and it really inspired me to create something fabulous.

Just thought I’d thank you, despite the fact you’ve probably completely forgotten about the fabulously informative e-mail that you sent me!

I wish you a very successful year in 2011 and look forward to seeing Bitey all over the internet and in the news very, very soon!

    C ya,
