A2H: my Toon Boom Book

My Toon Boom book is official! I’ve been writing for almost 12 months and I’m now finally wrapping up the illustrations for the last chapter. The Focal Press page currently has scant detail, but as the release date (July 2014) approaches there will be more info, more than likely including the table of contents.

Pretty soon you’ll be able to pre-order, if you want to secure your copy ahead of the release. I’ll post more updates as we get closer to the publish date.

If you’re interested in getting a head start, don’t forget to check out my Toon Boom Animate intro series, as well as the videos I made for the new effects in Harmony 10.3.

You can also download a PLE (personal learning edition) for free from the Toon Boom website. If you want to learn Harmony, download the Animate Pro PLE, as the two are identical, except that Harmony has those extra chunky effects and features. The PLE exports with a watermark and the files are incompatible with full versions of the software, but it never expires, so you can really get a feel for the software before ever committing to buy.

My other book

Hey, while we’re talking about books what I writ, how’s this for a gift idea? Celebrate whatever it is you celebrate by giving someone The Brackenwood Character Sketchbook. It’s POD (print on demand) so shipping times are often slow. Order early if you want to receive yours in time, or even better, how about asking your local bookshop to order a few thousand copies?

  1. Gonna buy this 🙂

  2. I will be getting my copy as well. I just wonder if this will pertain to those of us who are still on animate pro 2? Might just have to upgrade to Harmony. I definitely applaud your accomplishments and years of hard work, makes me strive even harder.

  3. Hey, Adam! Hey – ADAM!!!

  4. The link to he sketch book is broken (though it works if you click on the picture)

  5. is the brackenwood game cancelled?

    • No, it’s still in development. I’ve been writing for a year so as soon as I finish the book, we’ll finish up the game

  6. How may we purchase your book in such a way as to most generously reward the author? What about a signed copy? Skulking around your website has taught me a great deal and I feel the need to finally and reasonably compensate you…

    • thanks very much! I can’t promise it yet but I’ll talk to the publisher about distributing some signed copies through my site 🙂

  7. Can’t wait Adam, been searching high and low for a book exactly like this one. Thanks man!

  8. I really enjoyed your entry-level video tutorials on youtube from years ago. i SOOO wanted a volume 2 and 3 to continue learning visually. I’d gladly pay 50 to 100 bucks for a video course. i know its time consuming but dang i’d love some tutorials showcasing a scene or two. thanks for the book tho…

  9. I’ve had ToonBoom Animate Pro 3 for several years, but haven’t used it because it surely is one intimidating piece of software. I’ve used a myriad of different 2D animation applications, and this one is really overwhelming. SO I am anxiously and eagerly waiting for your book, hoping it’ll be beginner enough that I find it useful, but not so beginner as to become obsolete and repetitive of the basic stuff common to all applications, and animation applications in general.

    • Animate Pro 3 has only been out for a few months, but yes, if you’re new to the software, this book is mainly aimed at getting you up and running as quickly as possible. It should continue to see you through to intermediate and some advanced level stuff.

  10. YES! just pre-ordered my copy on Amazon! But it says it come out in august :[

  11. Are the new features of v3 (of animate and pro) explained or is only v2 which is showcased? Thanks.

  12. As a Canadian art-amateur trying to get into the Sheridan animation program, I would absolutely love to own this book.

  13. Hey Adam, I’ve been a huge fan since the early days and I’m seconding that signed copy. I’ve been waiting to pick up the book, and will do so, but I don’t want to buy it through Amazon to find that you sold a few signed copies here, I’d be crushed. Please let me know if there’s a chance there, because I wouldn’t want to miss out on that. Thanks for all the great work.

  14. I was online with the Toon Boom Harmony 11 Webinar this morning and was happy to hear you were online as well Adam. I have enjoyed many of your tutorials and am really looking forward to your book as well. I was able to pre-order it no problem through Focal Press. That’s great!

  15. bought. waiting. congrats.

  16. Does your book include a disc with video tutorials?

    Thank you and look forward,

  17. Two questions

    – does this book cover Harmony 11 at all

    – what’s up w/ Amazon saying “ships in 1 to 2 months”
