For the benefit of “Animate to Harmony” readers, this page contains all the downloadable chapter files. Please feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions or feedback on these files. I hope you enjoy the book!

The 25% Harmony discount at the front of the book applies to Harmony 11 only. Unfortunately this discount cannot be honoured on Harmony 12 and beyond.

Chapter Files

There are a few separate formats for Toon Boom scene files:

  • *.anim – can be opened in any version of Animate and Animate Pro. When a file contains Pro features, if you try to open it in Animate, a popup message will inform you.
  • *.xstage – can only be opened in Harmony
  • *.digital – this can be opened in any version of all three programs. It’s a universal format especially for downloadable example files!
  • *.ple – this is the file format of the Animate and Animate Pro personal learning editions. Currently there are no PLE files but if you need one, please feel free to request it.

  1. Hey Adam,

On page 45, you have a Harmony/Animate Pro only section stating that you can color mix beyond the 120 provided swatches. I’m using the basic Animate 3 (PLE) and I’m able to mix colors and add swatches as well.

    Mike

    • Hey Mike, thanks for the message. The section doesn’t say you can’t mix beyond the 120 starting colours. It just explains why Animate has a starting palette but Animate Pro and Harmony don’t.
      Thanks again!

  2. Dear Adam,

I like your book very much!! For me it is a real help to learn Harmony!! Unfortunately, when opening your fireball chapter files (running the latest Harmony version 11.1.0 (9565)) I receive an error message saying: “Invalid element folder: id 11, name 03.143, folder: Drawing”. Any idea where this comes from? The reason for switching from the official release to this update was due to the fact that I could not reproduce your Text Exercise 3 on page 74 because the “Break Apart Text Layers” only worked in the “Default workspace” but not in the “Animation workspace”. With 11.1.0 it works but now I receive the error messge when opening the fireball excercise files.

  3. Hi Adam,

I have found your online effects videos to be very helpful. I think that they are the best available on Harmony effects. Now I have your book and am loving it! It is so much deeper than the documentation provided by Toon Boom (sad to say). You explain ALL the steps for each procedure, trick, and tool in very clear and easy to understand terms.

Thanks for all the work you put into helping the Harmony community.

  4. Hello,

You may have mentioned this somewhere else but I noticed on page 369 of the book the exercise file is not available on your site. I only see the file with the guys around the table. Do you have the other files available somewhere to download?

    • oops, it looks I missed this one. I’ve updated that file so you should be able to download it now. Thanks for letting me know!

  5. Hi there, I was trying to find the Harmony effects_refract exercise file for chapter 4 pp. 323-328, but it doesn’t seem to be included in the zip.
Is there another place where I can download these files?
    Thanks,
    Nicole.

    • Thanks Nicole, I’ve fixed that and you should now have it in the chapter 4 Harmony (.xstage) download file. Thank you for taking the time to let me know.

  6. Now that ToonBoom has consolidated all their animation tools into a single application – Harmony 12 with 3 different flavors, are you planning a second edition of your book specifically for the new version?

    • Right now there are no plans to update the existing book. I could perhaps be convinced to write another paperback but that’s up to the publisher. I’d be more inclined to write a Harmony ebook and sell it on this site. If you think that sounds like a good idea, let me know!

      • Yes! A Harmony 12 ebook (with videos!) sold directly on your site would be a great idea!

      • Can your book be used for Harmony 12 Premium as well, and how much of it is relevant to v12? Also, do you know if there are a lot of new features or workflow differences from previous versions? if there are, an ebook for v12 might be a good idea.

        • Hi Roee, yes you can still use the book to learn Harmony 12 Essentials, Advanced and Premium. The major differences are additional features in Harmony 12 Premium.

The Animate and Animate Pro features described in the book are now in Harmony 12 Advanced and Premium.

  7. Thank you so much for writing this book, Adam. It is FANTASTIC!!!! It has answered so many questions for me. I really think Toonboon needs to contract you to do ALL their online tutorials. I just upgraded to Harmony 12 from Animate Pro, and am so disappointed with their training. They just don’t understand what users really need. Thank you again. I LOVE the book and all your tutorials online. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I will definitely purchase any books you write on Harmony in the future.

    • Thank you for the feedback! I’m so glad you’ve found the book helpful. If I don’t end up writing for Harmony 12, I will definitely release some video tutorials. In fact, I’ll probably do that anyway. Thanks again 🙂

  8. Hello Adam.
I am working through your excellent book. (I have Harmony 12.2 on iMac OSX 10.11.1 El Capitan).
In the brush exercise 4 on page 42, the strokes show up when I use the shortcut ‘K’, but in the top menu ‘View Show Stroke’ is greyed out, and therefore not usable. I have no idea why this is. could you say what I might be doing wrong?
I really like your teaching style.

    Regards.
    Peter.

    • Hi Peter, thanks for getting the book! Glad you’re enjoying it and hope you get a lot more from it.
Regarding View > Show Strokes, yes I have seen this behaviour myself and I find it a little puzzling. It wouldn’t hurt to drop an email to Toon Boom support to let them know.

In the meantime, the only workaround I’ve found is to make sure the Drawing view has focus when accessing that menu, then it seems to be fine. Either way, the K key always works, so I rarely need to choose Show Strokes from the menu.

  9. I can download your files for my Harmony 17 but I see the layers listed but nothing appears on the stage. What do I need to do? The look icon is on.
    Thanks,
    Pauline
