Snowman, you're closer than you think.
I try too hard to know math, so I overlooked any tricky outcomes.

Huzzah!
I missed this thread, and thought it could do with a revive.
The miller, and the miller's wife, That they might merry make, were set down with a dish of fruit, A cake, and half a cake, The parson of the town with them, His sister and no more: Now you have heard of all the guests, And of their bread the store. Yet did they use the matter with Such cunning, skill, and art, That every one ate half a cake, Before they did depart.

Millers, eh? They were grinding flour, so they could make more cakes while the parson and his daughter were over, perhaps?

Nice idea, I hadn't thought of that, but no.
Also, it's the parson's sister, not his daughter.

did they use the fruit and put it on the half cake, maybe with some cream and jam and stuff, and then call that a cake and cut it in half? The cakes could have been different sizes so the half cake might have been the size of the other whole cake. Or the parson might have brought a cake. It's only polite. OR! The parson did not eat cake because it is decadent and sinful! Yea.

Perhaps all together, they split the half cake and left the whole cake? Not that solid of a solution, but it's all I've got at this point.

Apparently it's important that the parson is with his sister, not his daughter. I'll ponder on that for a while.

The parson's sister is the millers wife? That way only 3 people were there, and a cake and a half gives each person half a cake. The miller is the parson? The miller and the miller's wife are the same person? Regardless, I think this is a play-on-words and only 3 people actually attended. That's my guess.
