Character design for next game in progress.

WWW
« on: February 19, 2010, 05:32:16 AM »

As a select few of you may know, another game has been in the works aside from the Lumberjack Attack game.  MonsteroCity is the name of the new game and it's been in production for a fast 3 months, which is the fastest I have ever designed a game.

Supermoose came to me with this idea of being able to select from 3 completely different playable monsters.  One-footed yellow-fellow, two-headed turtle, and a UFO.  Some might say this game is strangely similar to the game Rampage for the consoles, but in fact, this game is the exact opposite.  Instead of destroying buildings, you must protect them, from falling asteroids that is.

As of now, it's in the late beta stage. Beta 2.1.

Also, you may know that we are known as Serverus and consist of Myself, supermoose, and Mucky88.

Brettamatowski: Art/Design/SFX
Supermoose: Programming/Mechanics
Mucky88: Music/Audio

Here is the beta, please test it fully and really pick it apart so that we know what to fix in the next 6 days.
MonsteroCity Beta 2.1

P.S. $1000 dollars is at stake!
Edit: Newgrounds is holding a contest this month for the Flixel submissions.  1st place gets the big bills.  Wish us luck everyone!

A small problem I found is that when you go from the "how to" page to the main page and then click "play" you end up playing two songs at once.

The game seems like it could be really cool but it just isn't clicking for me I don't know why it just doesn't grab me and hold me.
But I sincerely wish you the best of luck.

It's just a rough beta still. The music isn't really set in completely yet and there's still quite a few graphics, on my part, that need to be implemented.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out, Kris.

I gave it a try. It's a neat idea you developed, and the different character play styles is a great approach to it. The turtle thing was definitely a fun one to play.

The things I'd hope to see for this game would be a pause button and a way to exit a game and get back to the main menu. Maybe some variation in the dangers that threaten the cityscapes too, and music that suites the scenario at hand (kind of like how Sonic oriented the music for the levels to match the tune with the level). Some of the music kind of felt like that's what you were going for, but I guess it didn't sound threatening enough for a situation where you have to bust open asteroids that are flying down to destroy cities. On the one map with the statues, the turtle was standing a little too high up, looked like he was floating in front of the buildings. The screen-clearing Spacebar move should shake the screen I think.

Dude that low-grav part at the end was a trip, I got a good combo and didn't come back down to the screen for so long, haha.

Oh, and I think you should add smog and mob graphics.  Wink

Thanks for testing it out, Snowman.  As I'm typing this, I'm working on the rest of the graphics for the game; Smog, mob, special attacks for the monsters, volcano, flour mill, the status/power meters, and the game over screen.

I'm giving myself the whole day to complete all of those.  So once I'm done, there will probably be one more beta test until the actual release on Newgrounds.

Edit: Also, there is a pause button (p), but we haven't added it to the instructions page.

Welp, folks. MonsteroCity is finally finished! We ask you to look for any problems (glitches) and report them to us. Other than that, we hope you enjoy it! Wish us luck for the competition on Newgrounds.com!

By the way, feel free to give any constructive crits on design/engine/music.  We'd like to know what you guys are looking for in future games of ours.

Thanks, er'body!

I like the art and the character design. I feel like the walking by doing jumpish movements makes the game feel slow and jerky. The gameplay is pretty standard, so I think execution is very important. just work on movement and stuff and poof! you're set!

Good work on the smog and mob graphics, thought it was a nice touch to the game. And the volcano, I was worried it would wreak havoc on the town so I tried to avoid it as much as I could, haha. And the tornado power attack(for the turtle at least) was pretty cool. I 5'd ya.  Grin

I moved this topic just for a bit in hopes to get some quick support on the submission on Newgrounds.

Please, please, please vote on our submission. Only a little bit until the competition is over, so we need as many votes as possible.  I hope you guys don't mind helping us out, since I love you all. Smiley

Help some fellow Brackies out! Bingbong

Thanks again, everybody.

Hey everyone!  Thanks for the support on our game.  We actually got front page'd on Newgrounds, which makes me very happy.  Whether or not we actually win the contest, I feel this was a moral victory.  Now, off to more games!
