free midi composing software???

hey guys, im a noob at audio and sound making but i found out that sounds get more and more important no matter what kind of job im doing, and i want to try some things out

my question is:
is there any sound composing software out there, best would be if its freeware, which is good to use and has a good variety of making sounds and music, musnt be pure midi, but i dont own instruments so plugging in something and recording is impossible, i will have to do everything on the pc...

i hope to get some informations from you guys, hope somebody can help
